Project justification:

In the world there are families in extreme conditions of vulnerability that still use firewood or charcoal to cook with high risk factors that are often present in the most precarious homes.

The use of firewood or wood charcoal as a source of energy for cooking continues to be one of the alternatives in developing countries because this resource can be obtained, processed, commercialized in its place of origin, mainly in rural areas, it is the source of cheaper energy.

There are a billion people without energy, of which 32 million people are in Latin America. This is 1 in 5 people.

What problems does the use of firewood involve?

  • Health of the people: According to the WHO, the burning of firewood produces 1.6 million deaths a year due to burns, poisoning and other problems related to health and air pollution.
  • School dropout: Children often accompany one of their parents to help them find these resources and cannot attend school.
  • Gender inequality: rural women are generally the ones who have to spend their time looking for firewood and cooking as well as taking care of their children. These are efforts that prevent them from investing that time in paid work, leaving them out of the labor market.
  • Deforestation and climate change: Deforestation and desertification caused by human activities and climate change pose great challenges for sustainable development and have affected the lives of millions of people in the fight against poverty.

Specific objectives

  • Train and develop skills for the construction of low-cost, efficient and safe solar cookers that can be used in their homes and in the community.
  • Raise awareness about environmental pollution, waste recycling and the use of renewable energy.
  • Sensitize the rural population about the importance of a healthy diet based on respect for the local food culture, especially training mothers as promoters of change.
  • Raise awareness and knowledge in domestic agriculture, nutrition and hygiene
  • Promote the culture of entrepreneurship.
  • Strengthen the integration of the rural community with the school in the area.
  • Improve the family economy, health and preserve the environment.
  • Encourage creativity.

The idea is not only to use resources that do not harm health and the environment, but to promote other values such as self-construction, empowerment, entrepreneurship, creativity, reuse, recycling, food sovereignty, nutrition and hygiene.

It is planned to carry out a medical follow-up of the new group of beneficiaries to know the impact of the project on health.

We consider it important that the project activities be developed in a school in the area, so that said school has the possibility of obtaining a portable parabolic solar cooker model as a way to replicate what has been learned and cook healthy for the students.
